Increasingly it seems that photographers, especially in the amateur sphere, are becoming disillusioned. Digital SLRs with video capability, heavy handed use of Photoshop and a mind boggling exponential development in technology to keep up with are all cited as examples of the once fine art of photography having lost its soul. Photographers are finding it difficult to keep up, being swept up in the quest for faster, better, smarter.

But how do we get behind our technical obsessions and get to the heart of the image?

How photography connects us to the world: David Griffin on TED.com

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds and has blossomed into an annual conference which now brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers.

Some amazing talks about photography have been at TED conferences, including memorable appearances by one of my favourite photographers, Frans Lanting and a great humanitarian photographer, Phil Borges. In this talk, the photo director for National Geographic, David Griffin explains the power of photography to connect us to our world.
