We’re all in this together – The Miniature Earth

I came across this video a while ago, and was reminded of it this morning for some strange reason.

This little piece is a powerful communicator – taking simple statistics like those pasted across news screens over and over again – and breathing life into them.

It is a great example of the way in which information and messages are presented having an effect on their uptake and emotional impact.

Enjoy.

Oh, at any stage do you wonder how many use Canon and how many use Nikon?

5D mkII Shipping – More HD video love

So, the much awaited 5D mkII is now available in China and Hong Kong, and is beginning to to ship to those who put their names down first on the uber long preorder lists in the states.

Australia isn’t far behind, with rumour being that Canon is shipping a handful of units (some say as few as 150) around Australia as soon as today.

I’m hoping to have mine at least by early next week!

Since my last post, a number of new, well produced films shot with the 5D mkII have surfaced. First up is a large production Korean adaptation of Reverie and secondly we have some journalistic stlye footage of Beijing.

Enjoy!

EOS 5D Mark2 Movi – Prism from chador on Vimeo.

Canon EOS5DmkII, One night in Beijing. from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

Both of these movies allow Vimeo members to download the originals for closer inspection, which is worth doing as Vimeo tops out at 24 fps for HD. That means these 30 fps movies are getting a crappy 24p conversion when Vimeo compresses them, which hides some of the 30p smoothness, but not in a good way.

Ashes and Snow – Gregory Colbert

Ashes and Snow is difficult to describe.

It is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, a primeval tapestry of visual imagery, rare instances where the power of the images comes less from their formal beauty than from the way they envelop the viewer in their mood … windows into a world with which we have become disconnected…

See what it feels like to be at the Beijing Olympic Stadium

Photographers readying to shoot the men's 100m final at Beijing National Stadium on Saturday (Photo by Kari Kuukka)

A new frontier within photography is dawning. Powerful software is allowing photographers to do amazing things, from HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, which allows photographers to capture a substantially larger range of tones by combining a number of different exposures, to rich multimedia slideshows and interactive presentations which are allowing photojournalists to tell their stories through the best means possible by combining sound, video and still photographs.

Another of these technologies is becoming more and more popular. 360 degree interactive panoramic photography, as seen in Google earth’s ’streetview’ has an incredible ability, even beyond the power of the motion picture and video, to recreate atmosphere and tangible sense of place.

One of the best examples I’ve seen of this is a 360 degree high resolution panorama, shot by sports shooter Kari Kuukka from a photographer’s corral about 30 minutes before the start of the men’s 100m final at Beijing National Stadium last Saturday. For me, this single image recreates what it would be like to be in the Olympic Stadium better than anything else I have ever seen.

To view the Flash panorama in its own window, click here. The Shift key will zoom in, the Command (Mac) / Control (Windows) key will zoom out. Click and hold down the mouse button inside the photo to navigate around.

Yanchep Adventures: Slideshow

I’ve been playing with media presentations lately. Here’s a little slideshow I concocted showing our adventures at Yanchep. What I love about doing this is that when you deal with your images in this fashion, you find storylines in your work where you thought there were none.

If you think your connection can handle it, try the “full screen” option for the best experience!

Enjoy!

Flip-book style shooting – Canon XSi Ad

Check out this awesome video put together for an ad promoting the new Canon XSi/450D running in the US. Apparently 70,000 images were shot, funnily enough all on the 10fps capable Canon 1D MKIII…

Awesome idea, and reminds me of one of the more innovative media presentations i’ve seen:
