I’ve been working on a lot of new portfolio pieces lately. This shoot was especially fun. We had about 15 of my friends pass through the studio throughout the day and dressed them up in the most creative way possible. We got some great stuff out of it, here are just a few of the images from the day.

Cheers!

It’s been a long time.

Haven’t made the time to blog in too long. Here’s something new. we’ve been busy retouching some BIG projects lately.

Shot this a month or two ago. Built a rain machine and off we went. LIGHTS camera and action. Love the way the lights pick up the rain and texture of the water splashes against her skin.

Off to Hawaii tomorrow, can’t wait!

New Work: HEAT

I’ve been shooting lots in the studio lately.

Here’s something we shot recently. This was mostly an excercise in lighting, pushing the boundaries of what I had tried before and then adding a little bit extra. I shot a whole series and this is only one of the standout frames. One of the issues shooting under such controlled lighting is that many of the frames only differ almost imperceptivly in facial expression and framing, so it’s often difficult to choose a favourite! We had tried this same shot with a fan from the right but I really like the simple symmetry so in the end decided against it.It is composed of about 5 lights – can you guess where they are?

I really enjoy the studio in that all the gear is within easy reach and I can throw as much light around as I want, shaping it with grids, octaboxes, beauty dishes and all manner of reflectors. However, I often feel it lacks atmosphere and a sense of place. In this shot I added a background element to provide some interest and depth to otherwise stark surroundings – the image being more conceptual than something based in reality.

I have a huge backlog of shoots to process, so stay tuned for more uploads throughout the next few weeks.

Meet ‘The Furor’ – coming to an ancient battlefield near you!

I have always enjoyed band photography for the freedom it grants the photographer in terms of creativity and artistic license. I also enjoy it because it involves the promotion of fellow artists.

Shooting right into the deep end, a little while ago I was lucky enough to photograph one of the world’s most dramatic acts, ‘The Furor’ a metal band (heralding from Perth, Western Australia) with an exceptional sense of showmanship. Not only that, the band’s members are really nice guys, despite their chilling avatars.

What was important in this shoot was subject driven lighting. We wanted to represent the band members as darkly as possible, lighting them dramatically as though we were in a Hollywood blockbuster – they the dark eyed villains. It wasn’t just the lighting though, the band members ability to appear as dark and sinister as their outfits suggest was also a big part of our success – cheers guys!

I’m still working through more photos in lightroom, but for now, I’ll leave you with a portrait of each of the band members – after the jump!

A sign of things to come…

Heavy Metal band, “The Furor” shot yesterday in a decaying asbestos shed somewhere in suburban Perth, Western Australia. Pictured is my good friend Tim, busting some LCD action on the 3 band members. The shoot went oh so well and it was awesome working with the band.

The real good stuff is incoming…

New Portfolio Work: Kick!

A shot from yesterday evening. A recent interest in mine has been in shooting athletes and sports. I like the idea of motion, and the challenges of conveying it on a still image.

Without knowing it at the time, this shoot is probably subconsciously inspired by my favourite Nike Ad!

New portfolio work: Girl Fight

_MG_7155-Edit

I’ve been working on a street fighting themed series lately. I find it a really interesting subject to explore from the standpoint of story driven location lighting.

Workplace Hazards!

Tok-ay!

The Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) is one of the most commonly encountered reptiles in Southeast Asia (This one is from Thailand, near the Burmese border). They frequent houses and man-made structures, coming out at night to hunt for insects and smaller geckos. They are quite enormous for a gecko, reaching lengths over a foot long!

On White…

I spent this morning banging out some studio portraits of the full staff of Accountants and Financial Advisers who are based at an Accounting firm in Subiaco. Subi is a great place to work,a local suburb rich in high end professional consulting services and the height of Perth’s creative scene.

As the staff are involved in a very precise business, the height of professionalism, we wanted their portraits to reflect this. However, we also wanted each staff member to express their personality, making them appear more approachable – more human.

So, the brief was white, studio white…and lots of it.
