Content Aware Fill – New photoshop feature from Adobe Labs

Phew, it’s been a while since my last post – we’ve been so busy working on retouching projects that time has flown by. I’ve been in California now for almost 4 months! It has been an absolute blast.

I was at Photoshop World in Las Vegas at the beginning of the month – where I met a whole bunch of the guys from NAPP and learnt a few new things. At the opening Keynote one of the presenters demonstrated some of the new features Adobe has been working on.

Here are two new technologies they’ve been developing. Unfortunately we aren’t to know when they might be showing up in a release version of Photoshop. The first is content aware patching. I use the patch tool regularly every day, so this looks pretty exciting – though whether or not it will be useful in real-world commercial retouching remains to be seen….Check out the very cool video demo here…

The second is similar, probably based on the same algorithms – content aware healing. This looks like it will be tremendously useful for day to day retouching where extraneous elements need to be removed from source images. Check it out here…

Back to my roots then to the polar opposite – Borneo to California

Borneo Adventure

Big change is coming. I’ve once again self diagnosed extreme wanderlust and have made plans to have myself remedied – too long have I been cooped up in the studio.

First stop -  Malaysian Borneo – where I will live for two weeks deep in the South East Asian Jungle. Sabah is where I’ll be going, a Malaysian State on the north-eastern part of Borneo, the world’s third largest island and known as arguably the best place in Southeast Asia to observe wildlife. We’ll be spending most of our time in the interior of the region, along the edge of the Kinabatangan River and at a research station in one of Sabah’s largest reserves. The jungles of Sabah contain some of the oldest rainforests in the world and are home to an abundance of animal and plant species. Pygmy elephants, Proboscis Monkeys, Orangutans, pitcher plants, orchids, and the world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia, can be found. Lots of photography will be taking place and I have an interesting and somewhat innovative project to trial while I’m there.

Second Stop – California - where I will be working with a photographer who I greatly admire to help coordinate photo shoots for some of the biggest brands in the world. More news on that when I touch down in early June.

Lots of new photos landing soon…

5D mkII Shipping – More HD video love

So, the much awaited 5D mkII is now available in China and Hong Kong, and is beginning to to ship to those who put their names down first on the uber long preorder lists in the states.

Australia isn’t far behind, with rumour being that Canon is shipping a handful of units (some say as few as 150) around Australia as soon as today.

I’m hoping to have mine at least by early next week!

Since my last post, a number of new, well produced films shot with the 5D mkII have surfaced. First up is a large production Korean adaptation of Reverie and secondly we have some journalistic stlye footage of Beijing.

Enjoy!

EOS 5D Mark2 Movi – Prism from chador on Vimeo.

Canon EOS5DmkII, One night in Beijing. from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

Both of these movies allow Vimeo members to download the originals for closer inspection, which is worth doing as Vimeo tops out at 24 fps for HD. That means these 30 fps movies are getting a crappy 24p conversion when Vimeo compresses them, which hides some of the 30p smoothness, but not in a good way.

Earth from Above: Perth photography exhibition

For those of you in Perth, don’t miss one of the most incredible and thought provoking photography exhibitions you may ever see. Yann Arthus Bertrand’s world famous ‘Earth from Above’ series (which has been viewed by 60 million people worldwide in its book and gallery forms) is exhibited outside the Perth Art Gallery until January. The outdoor presentation runs 24hrs a day and documents some of the most incredible places on earth, from a perspective you’ve never seen them before – the air.

I first became familiar with Bertrand’s amazing work from his book ‘Being a Photographer‘ and was pleasantly surprised when I saw this traveling exhibition would be coming to Perth.

While you’re down there, you can also check out the small gallery of Nature Photography at the Western Australian Museum, which is about 100m away. Part of the ANZANG nature photography competition, the traveling gallery encompasses some of the best nature photography from Australia and New Zealand.

Lightroom 2 released!

I am a disciple of lightroom.

This piece of software makes my life so much easier, speeding up everything from sorting through thousands of images to making adjustments via Adobe’s powerful Adobe Camera Raw interface.

Big News, the official full release of Lightroom 2 was released this morning!!!

It is an amazing upgrade from the last iteration, Lightroom 1.4, and promises photographers an even more enhanced workflow experience.

My favourite new features include localised adjustments (awesome when wielding a Wacom Tablet) and support for dual monitors.

According to Adobe, the powers that be have deemed the official top new features list to include:

* Local adjustment brush
* Enhanced organizational tools
* Volume management
* Extensible architecture
* Multiple monitor support
* Flexible print package functionality
* Streamlined Photoshop CS3 integration
* Enhanced output sharpening
* 64-bit support for Windows® and Mac OS

To find out more, check out the awesome Lightroom 2 Learning Centre presented by Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski from the NAPP.

Enjoy!

Ray Hanas – Where service still matters…

Ray Hanas

One almost forgets the value of service. It’s the reason why shopfronts will never disappear in lieu of oftentimes more efficient and less expensive ebay resellers and online stores. It’s what drives successful business dealings and ultimately business success.

I was reminded of this when, this afternoon, i wandered into Ray Hanas Martial Arts supply store in Northbridge, simply to buy some hand wraps for an upcoming photography project.
Not only did Sunil, who runs the store, help me find what i was after, he also proceeded to illustrate what other products his store offered which could help me in my eternal search for great props – all with great enthusiasm and genuine interest in how he could help.
So, if you ever need anything related to the martial arts, stop by Ray Hanas and have a chat with Sunil – be reminded what real service is like.

Demystifying Camera Specifications – Canon 50MP sensor

There are reports that Canon is working on producing a 50 megapixel sensor, courtesy of a roughly translated and interpreted Chinese article from the Chinese P&E show.

Presumably such a sensor will find its way into Canon’s flagship 1D series at some stage. At the moment Canon lead the way in terms of DSLR megapixel count, while Sony is working on producing its much anticipated A900 which will then hold the crown (with about 24megapixels). Nikon is also believed to have a D3x in the works which will probably also trump Canon’s 1D in terms of sheer pixel count by the time it is released.

I’m not even sure L glass could withstand a 50MP sensor. But we may see sooner than we think…
For all the naysayers that immediately pounce on such high megapixel counts being ‘too much’ resolution. I’d seriously suggest watching (and actually understanding) the  excellent videos at Panavision about MTF and camera specifications. Don’t be put off by the fact that much of the dialogue is about video cameras, the same rules still apply to DSLRs.
Now here’s hoping to some solid info emerging on the newest iteration of Canon’s 5d – the rumors are pointing to an announcement in time for Photokina in September.
